The U.S. Missile Defense Agency said Wednesday that it awarded a division of military contractor Raytheon Co. a contract worth about $266 million for 29 missiles for the U.S. and Japan.

The award, which modified an existing contract with Raytheon Missile Systems, based in Tucson, calls for the continued development and delivery of 29 missiles supporting the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. Work is expected to be complete by December 2009.

The United States and Japan started jointly researching ballistic missile defense technology in 1999, one year after North Korea test-fired a long-range missile over northern Japan.
