AOMORI, Japan (Kyodo) - Trial use of new U.S. military radar for missile defense at Japan's Air Self-Defense Force base in Aomori Prefecture will start this summer, Japanese officials said Thursday.

The mobile "X-band" radar, which will be used to detect and track ballistic missiles, is likely to be fully installed at the base, facing the Sea of Japan, by December.

About 10 U.S. military personnel and roughly 50 civilians will be stationed at the facility.

The radar deployment is part of the missile defense cooperation between Japan and the United States, which began after North Korea fired a long-range missile in August 1998, part of which flew over Japan and dropped into the Pacific Ocean.
