This is the submarine that carries Britain's weapons of mass destruction
The phrase 'Weapons of mass destruction' (WMD) is now part of our everyday language. It's usually in the context of what a supposed 'enemy' might possess.

But did you know that Britain also has WMD and has had for over 40 years?

Britain has four nuclear-armed, nuclear-powered Trident submarines. Each submarine has 16 missiles carrying up to 48 nuclear warheads. Each warhead has the destructive killing power seven times that of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945. These nuclear weapons are based at Faslane, 30 miles from Glasgow, and cost us, the British taxpayer, up to £1.5 billion every year.

By failing to distinguish between civilians and military personnel, nuclear weapons break international humanitarian law. The heat from a nuclear bomb would cause eyeballs to melt, internal organs to boil and skin to fall off the body. The lucky ones are vaporised immediately. The radiation causes death, cancers, birth deformities and still-births - and radiation can travel very long distances.

All this is despite the fact that Britain is part of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) which calls for all countries to get rid of their nuclear weapons.

It's hypocritical to tell others to disarm when we still have WMD ourselves.

Disarmament begins at home!

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament works to get rid of all nuclear weapons everywhere.
