EU gets tough over stranded sub
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, Daily Telegraph

Brussels - THE European Commission has demanded an explanation from Britain over its handling of the damaged nuclear submarine Tireless, stranded in Gibraltar for six months. Responding to complaints from Spanish citizens in neighbouring Andalusia, the commission has requested details of the Government's intentions in case of a threat to public health from a "radiological emergency". James Currie, the commission's director-general for the environment, said there were concerns about "radioactively contaminated water" that might result from repair work. Britain was due to respond last Friday but has now been allowed more time. If it fails to offer satisfactory assurances, it could be taken to the European Court of Justice.
