When the newly elected MP’s from Scotland arrive at Westminster next week they will find in their mail-boxes a letter from Scottish CND calling on every Scottish MP not to support the replacement of Britain’s nuclear weapons.

A decision whether to renew the nuclear weapons based at Faslane on the Clyde will need to be taken during the new session of Parliament but a recent opinion poll showed that 78 per cent of Scots do not want to replace Britain’s nuclear weapons.(1)

Pressed to comment Prime Minister Tony Blair, stated on 3rd May, that the decision about replacing Trident would be made "at some point in time in the next few years”(2).On Newsnight during his Election campaign, he said that he believed “it is important to retain a nuclear deterrent” and that he believed there was a need to replace Trident.(3)

Dr Alan Mackinnon, Chair of Scottish CND commented: “A clear message from this election is that the people essentially voted for peace and have voiced their protest at the illegal war with Iraq. In the first instance people voted against war and secondly they voted in favour of public services. Yet the replacement of Trident will cost at least £20 billion, money that could be better spent on health, housing and education. Moreover it will send all the wrong messages around the world and will encourage nuclear proliferation, making Britain more of a target.”

Notes
1: System Three Poll commissioned by the Scottish National Party. 1000 Scottish voters were asked in March 2005: “Would you support or oppose the government buying a new nuclear missile system to replace Trident?” 13% said they would support plans for the British government to spend billions on an updated nuclear deterrent, 78% said they would oppose the move.
