HELEN JOHN IMPRISONED FOR DENOUNCING U.S. PLANS TO USE PLUTONIUM FOR SPACE WARFARE |
|
Helen John, of the Menwith Hill Women's Peace Camp in North Yorkshire, was today imprisoned for seven days by Harrogate Magistrates' Court for nonpayment of fines arising from painting the US Embassy in London with the slogan, "SHUT MENWITH HILL. NO STAR WARS" . She has been sent to the women's remand centre in Durham. Viv Horton has already spent a week in prison this last January for painting a slogan on the same occasion which read "STOP CASSINI. NO PLUTONIUM IN SPACE." In other developments, Judge Hooper at Leeds Crown Court on 22 June 1998 gave credence to North Yorkshire County Council's attempt to serve injunctions on five named women when he banned Anne Lee, Helen John and Jenny Gaiawyn from sleeping at the women's peace camp between 11pm-7am after 22 July. He told North Yorkshire to apply for removal of the caravans. This would leave us with the right to pass and re-pass the highway, the same as at Greenham. Get out your plastic sheets, women....A non-injunctees sleep-over party is being planned for 22/23 July. Also, a date has finally been set for the MOD's appeal against Judge Crabtree's 5 September 1997 ruling that the new byelaws at Menwith were invalid. The appeal will be heard at the High Court in the Strand on 23 July, 1998. The two women against whom the original convictions were quashed are Helen John and Anne Lee. Helen John is being represented by Vera Baird of Took St. Chambers, who won the Hawks to Indonesia case in Liverpool. Anne Lee is representing herself. |
