DRAFT
LETTER TO YOUR MP AGAINST MISSILE DEFENCE INTERCEPTORS IN THE UK
Dear
XXXXX MP,
I
am extremely concerned by recent press reports which state that
the US is considering placing Missile Defence interceptors in the
United Kingdom. The UK has already played a sugnificant role in
missile defence by allowing the use of RAF Fylingdales for the system.
The placing of interceptor missiles would be an entirely different
story, radically increasing our involvement and support and making
the site a considerable target to attack.
These
interceptor missiles are not only useful as part of a missile defence
system. They can also be used to attack satellites and that capability,
whether it be used or not, is certain to cause further instability.
I
am against the Missile Defence system completely. It is already
causing nuclear proliferation and unrest and has the potential to
lead to further proliferation, space weapons and a break-down in
disarmament efforts. However, the placing of interceptor missiles
in the UK would take us to a whole new level of involvement in a
system that is at best unproven and at worst dangerously destabilising.
The
UK should not play any futher part in missile defence and certainly
should not host missiles. Please tell me if you agree with these
sentiments and please pass my comments on to Geoff Hoon and ask
him whether he has had any dicsussion with the US on this matter
and whether he supports the proposal.
Yours
sincerely,
