Demonstration at RAF Fylingdales Launches
‘Keep Space for Peace Week’ 2006

Guest Speakers, Musicians, Food and More on the Moor!
US plans to weaponise space as part of the so-called ‘Missile Defence’ or ‘Star Wars’ programme are proceeding at a rapid rate. RAF Fylingdales is a crucial base for these plans and will be part of a global network designed solely to allow the US to launch pre-emptive attacks across the world, free from fear of retaliation.

We say NO!

Campaigners from across Yorkshire will be meeting at RAF Fylingdales on Sunday 1st October to protest against Britain’s role in the US ‘Missile Defence’ system.

Organised by Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the demonstration is the first in a series of events across the world; including the US, India, Sweden and Australia, to draw attention to continued plans by the US Government to gain full military control of space.

Campaigners will meet at Ellerbeck, just down from the base (on the A169 between Pickering and Whitby) from 1pm and will enjoy music, speeches and food by ‘Veggies’ before walking up to the base to hand in a letter to the Station Commander. The letter will outline the reasons for the demonstration and outline the ongoing and increasing opposition to the role of the base.

The so-called ‘Missile Defence’ programme is a priority of the US Administration that has so far cost billions of dollars and proved to be very unreliable. Technologies being developed are supposedly to protect the US from any missile attack, by creating a ‘space shield’, however the reality is that the weapons system will allow the US to strike any target in the world, free from fear of retaliation.

RAF Fylingdales is a radar station essential to the development of the project.

Dave Webb, Convenor of Yorkshire CND said; “We call upon the British Government to renounce Missile Defence and to withdraw the use of Fylingdales from the US Missile Defence programme. Such a move would be a significant step in encouraging other nations to abandon similar costly schemes and concentrate on more useful projects for their citizens and neighbours.”
