Fylingdales - The Protest Against it |
||||||||
|
Peace campaigners in Yorkshire have long recognised the role of RAF Fylingdales as a major component in US war fighting strategy. Ever since it was first built there has been a strong local protest against its role and against its prescence in a place of natural beauty (the North Yorkshire Moors).
The continued protest and non violent direct action at the base has been held responsible for the erection, in January 1999 , of a new high security electric fence (see news item of 8/1/99). However, protesters suggest that the existence of the fence is due to the increasingly important role of Fylingdales as a component of the American "Star Wars" (NMD) program . |

| A national demonstration by CND was held on July 8th 2000 - to protest against the "Star Wars" role. It was linked with a similar demonstration organised by CND and the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB) at the other Yorkshire Star Wars installation at Menwith Hill on July 4th (Independence from America Day). | ||||||||

On 15th June 2002 over 300 people joined in a Party on the Moor to mark the US withdrawal from the ABM Treaty and to protest about the base's role in Star Wars - see report "Goodbye ABM Treaty - Hello Missile Defence" .
In June 2002 the "Star Peace Camp" was set up by Ulla Roder - See items on Fylingdales Star Peace Camp

General Kadish Visits Fylingdales - November 2002
On 20th November 2002 , with just four days notice a group of hardy people turned out in atrocious weather to protest at the visit to Fylingdales of Lt General Kadish, head of the Missile Defence Agency (see articles ). This was thought at the time to be a significant visit and indeed less than 1 month later the US made an official request to the UK government, asking for permission to upgrade Fylingdales for use in their missile defence system (see articles ). The UK government issued a statement , via Geoff Hoon, as did the Parliamentary Defence Committee (see also the BASIC report on the official government position on missile defence ) - a nationwide debate was promised ........ but never really materialised.
