'US BASES ON BRITISH TERRITORY'
Quaker briefing now available:

A worldwide network of military bases provides the United States with a global platform for warfare and espionage.

This briefing discusses the history and status of US bases on British territory and examines their purposes within the US strategic agenda. The paper explores the ways in which US bases and their status largely escape public scrutiny. While affirming the cultural friendship between the two countries, the briefing argues that strategic alliance with the US implicates the UK in an agenda with manifold costs to the world. Major US bases on British territory are described in an appendix with a special focus on those at Lakenheath and Menwith Hill and the joint UK-US base at Fylingdales. The paper also offers pointers for action.

The CAMPAIGN FOR THE ACCOUNTABILITY OF AMERICAN BASES has campaigned for many years at NSA Menwith Hill and other American bases in the UK.

 
CAAB is a campaign.......
  • grounded in a deep concern and opposition to weapons of mass destruction in general and nuclear weapons in particular - specifically the proposed American Missile Defense/Theater Missile Defense (AMD/TMD) systems
  • focussed on American bases in the UK and abroad
  • raising public awareness, scrutiny and accountability of American bases in the UK - over here, out of control and secretive

CAAB works to reveal this by.........

  • asking questions
  • using the democratic process by working with local councillors, MPs and MEPs - asking Parliamentary questions
  • taking action through the legal system to change unsafe law - bringing the executive to account through the courts
  • regularly monitoring US bases and Planning Departments re proposed developments on US bases-American AMD/TMD systems
  • working with researchers, academics, media, peace activists
  • making use of the US Freedom of Information Act and the UK Open Access to Government Information procedures
  • taking non violent direct action and civil disobedience
